Britons offered free flight out of Libya

Sunday, 02 Mar, 2011 0

Britons remaining in Libya will have the option of fleeing the country on a free flight to Malta this afternoon, said the Foreign Office.

The flight will leave Zella at 1330, arriving in Tripoli at 1445 and departing from there for Valletta in Malta at 1600.

The flight has room for British nationals, who will be able to board without payment. To register for a seat, passengers need to call the Foreign Office’s 24-hour hotline on +44 (0) 20 7008 0000 or Skype ‘Libyacharterflight’.

They are also being advised to monitor the Foreign Office’s Travel Advice and Twitter for further details about the flight.

Passengers are being warned that there are already large numbers of people crammed into Tripoli airport and they should take their own food and water. The majority of airline offices at the airport are closed and there will be no British Embassy representative there.

British nationals who have arrived in Malta from Libya wishing to travel on to the UK should call the Foreign Office on the above telephone number for information.

The Foreign Office said the vast majority of Britons who wanted to leave Libya had now done so, but it advised those remaining to get in touch as violence continues to spread across the country.
