Brittany backs off Le Harve route
The future of ferry links between Portsmouth and Le Harve looks doubtful following a decision by Brittany Ferries to renege on its intention to take the route from P&O.
Last autumn P&O announced its intention to close all Western Channel routes except Portsmouth-Bilbao as part of a cost-saving initiative.
Following the announcement rivals Brittany Ferries said it would take over sailings on various routes including Portsmouth-Le Havre.
Brittany had signed a memorandum of understanding to assume the charters of Pride of Le Havre and Pride of Portsmouth and to offer an alternative service to Le Havre.
But Brittany Ferries has now decided the route is not commercially viable and from September 2005 the Portsmouth-Le Harve route will be pulled by P&O, subject to employee consultation.
Brittany Ferries says it will instead concentrate on developing its existing routes from Portsmouth to Caen, St Malo and Cherbourg, along with its cross channel routes from Poole and Plymouth.
