Budget airlines boost Changi to record
SINGAPORE – The impact of the low cost carriers in Asia has been underlined by the latest traffic figures at Singapore Changi airport.
The overall number of flights hit an all-time high at Changi in October: the total of 20,985 was 6.7 percent higher than in October 2008.
Budget carriers AirAsia, Jetstar Asia and Tiger Airways accounted for about one in five flights – a big lift from 2004 when just one in every 20 flights in and out of the airport was by a low cost carrier.
The opening up of the Singapore-Malaysia air routes last year has been a major factor in the number of low cost flights out of Changi.
At the end of October, Changi was served by 85 airlines linking Singapore to 200 cities in 60 countries.
