Burnie airport upgrade to go ahead
A partial upgrade and promotion of the Burnie airport is now likely to proceed, despite the imminent loss of Qantas flights.
Qantaslink will stop its six daily flights at the end of next month, blaming a 20 per cent drop in passengers and soaring fuel costs.
The airport’s chairman Paul Arnold is confident Regional Express will announce extra flights early next week.
He says a revised upgrade will be back on the agenda when REX’s managing director visits the airport on Monday.
“Qantaslink will be pulling out of the terminal, which will free up aspects of the terminal that currently weren’t available to us,” he said.
“And that will allow us to reconsider the terminal upgrade in a new light, with REX as the majority carrier.
“And that will allow us to have discussions with the managing director about what aspects of the terminal upgrade that we can proceed with.”
