Business as usual in Madeira following mudslides
Tour operators are running services as normal to the island of Madeira following the weekend’s mudslide that killed 42, including one British tourist.
But holidaymakers to the Portuguese island are being warned by the Foreign Office to contact tour operators and airlines before travelling.
The mudslides affected central Funchal but a spokesperson at Thomas Cook said most of the hotels British operators used were not in that area of town. Heavy storms hit the popular winter sun spot on Saturday causing flooding and torrents of water to sweep through streets and buildings.
It is thought that up to 2,000 British holidaymakers are currently on the island with more due to fly out this week.
