Business travel technology ‘antiquated and clunky’
Technology in the business travel industry is “antiquated and clunky”, according to corporate buyers.
At the Guild of Travel Management Companies Conference in Istanbul this week, Caroline Strachan, chairman of the Institute of Travel Managers, told agents that the corporate travel industry is lagging far behind the leisure industry when it comes to its booking tools and technology.
She said a recent survey by ITM showed 70% of buyers believed the internet undermines a managed travel programme.
“As soon as travellers see a better price on the internet they lose confidence,” she said. “They believe the TMCs are at fault. You are getting the blame.”
She said some companies are now trialling ‘open’ travel programmes where a section of their travelling employees are allowed to make their own bookings online.
“They are telling people you can do what you like as long as you get the lowest price. It will be really interesting to see the outcome of these pilot programmes,” she said.
