Calais closed after WW2 bombs found by builders

The port of Calais closed yesterday delaying thousands of holidaymakers as disposal experts defused bombs left over from the Second World War.

Cars and lorries were prevented from boarding ferries to the UK while a team of French army specialists spent Sunday morning working on the devices.

The large bombs were discovered by builders upgrading the Channel port which led to a huge exclusion zone almost a mile across.

Entry to the port was shut from around 5am on Sunday.

P&O Ferries said that Dover to Calais ferries would still travel but ‘discharge would be diverted away from the closed areas’.

It added: "Calais-Dover traffic will be suspended until the exercise is complete. We have been asked by authorities to plan for a closure right up until 14.30.

"We do advise that any day trip should be re-arranged for another day."
