Call for greater funding for London’s tourism

The London Tourist Board and Convention Bureau (LTB) has welcomed the release of the consultation paper on tourism, published by the London Development Agency (LDA), which underlines LTB’s calls for greater funding of the capital’s second largest industry.

Tourism is London’s second largest industry, worth £8 billion and 8% of the city’s GDP. London attracts around 28 million visitors a year with half coming from within the UK. However, it is anticipated that spending will have dropped by up to £1.5 billion in 2001.

Teresa Wickham, chairman of LTB, said: “The change of governance of London in May 2000 provided the opportunity for a greater focus on tourism in the capital – its crucial role in the local economy and the role it should play in economic development. By working together, the Mayor, LDA and LTB will generate a greater profile for London as a business and leisure destination.”

The consultation paper has been published following a six month, independent review by the LDA.

Mrs Wickham said: “LTB believes that tourism in London has been seriously under-funded for many years. This has come out very clearly in the review process and the consultation paper.”

“We are currently seeking the views of our members and look forward to working with the Mayor of London and the LDA on the development and implementation of a long-term strategy to optimise the benefits of tourism for the economy and Londoners.”
