Call for holiday accommodation gas audit
A campaign to raise awareness of carbon monoxide posioning is to call for the travel industry to sponsor an independent audit of holiday accommodation.
Campaigners want to ensure that hotels and villas meet UK gas standards and to assure consumers that tour operators meet Uk standards, according to a BBC report.
The call is expected with the launch of a carbon monoxide awareness day and follows the death of two children who were overcome by gas at their hotel in Corfu in October.
The parents of the dead children, who were on a half-term holiday, are due to help launch the campaign at the House of Lords.
Deaths due to carbon monoxide poisioning are reported to have risen by 33% between 2003-04 and 2004-05, according to The Carbon Monoxide and Gas Saftey Society (CO-Gas Safety).
The group has joined forces with CO-Awareness, Consumer Safety International and The Dominic Rodgers Trust to call for the fule and tourism industry to pay for an immediate campaign about the danger of carbon monoxide, the BBC reported.
