Cambodian Embassy in France asking to rethink Bangkok airport for transit to Cambodia

The war between Cambodia and Thailand is not only along the borders. It is also in safety advices that authorities will emit. Latest is a letter from the Cambodian Ambassador to France who asks travelers to avoid a transit on Thai carriers through Bangkok airport.

In the statement dated December 16, 2025, the Royal Embassy of Cambodia advises travelers bound for the kingdom to avoid transiting through Bangkok, citing a growing number of complaints linked to Thai airport procedures that have disrupted journeys to Cambodia.

In a notice issued in mid-December, the embassy warned that passengers traveling via Bangkok’s main international hubs have faced unusually strict screening by Thai authorities.

According to the Embassy’s advisory, some travelers reported extensive questioning, repeated checks of travel documents, and requests for proof of financial means and accommodation in Cambodia, even when they were only transiting. Others complained of missed connections, long delays and baggage problems upon arrival at their final destination.

Thai authorities strengthening security for visa-free travelers to Cambodia

The embassy stressed that the difficulties occurred outside Cambodian territory and were therefore beyond the control of Cambodian authorities. Still, it said the volume and consistency of the reports had become significant enough to justify a formal warning, particularly for European travelers heading to Phnom Penh or Siem Reap via Thailand.

The advisory does not label Bangkok as unsafe, nor does it discourage travel to Thailand as a destination. Instead, it focuses on the travel experience for passengers using Bangkok as a transit point en route to Cambodia. To minimize disruptions, the embassy recommended that travelers consider alternative routing options and transit hubs where possible.

Meanwhile, instructions have also been given in Thailand to scrutinize more travelers as the country has stepped up airport security measures for visa-free foreign nationals, particularly towards Cambodian citizens and individuals suspected of mercenary activity.

The Immigration Bureau announced the enhanced screening measures on 15 December. They confirm their immediate implementation at Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok-Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Hat Yai airports. Authorities said the measures aim to identify individuals suspected of espionage, illegal border crossings, or other activities that could threaten national security.

Thai authorities enforce identification screenings on two main groups: suspected mercenary personnel from Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and Cambodian nationals traveling to Thailand. According to local reports, immigration denied entry to 185 individuals between early December and 13 December.

Authorities acknowledged that the enhanced screening could increase waiting times at Suvarnabhumi Airport during peak hours. However, the Immigration Bureau said it has deployed full staffing to manage passenger flows, with processing times expected to remain within 45 minutes.

Airlines and travel agents should then eventually adjust itineraries to Cambodia in response, suggesting connections through regional hubs such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Ho Chi Minh City. All these airports offer multiple daily flights to Cambodia.
