Despite conflict flights operate normally between Cambodia and Thailand

In contrary to some rumors about the suspension of flights between Cambodia and Thailand, air transport between  the two countries remains fully operational, despite escalating tensions at the land border. This is the situation on July 25, 2025 but it could of course change over time.

According to the website flightradar24.com, 7 airlines operate between Cambodia and Thailand. They effectively link Phnom Penh and Siem Reap either to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK).

The complete flights’ offer per week comprises 85 return frequencies between Phnom Penh and Bangkok BKK and 11 return frequencies to Bangkok DMK.

From and to Siem Reap, there are 24 return frequencies per week to Bangkok BKK and 14 return frequencies to Bangkok DMK. With 128 weekly flights, airlines offer on average 18 return per day.

The announcement by former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and military in late June of foreigners being restricted to fly from Bangkok to Siem Reap never materialized. It is indeed difficult to find ways to forbid passengers to fly to a specific destination if they are still flights on offer…

First effects of the conflict on flight routes and Thai Airways International

Meanwhile, Cambodian civil aviation authorities do not allow airlines to fly over the border area. Which means slightly longer flying times for most routes passing over Northeastern Thailand and Western Cambodia.

The announcement of a potential suspension of Thai Airways International frequencies to Phnom Penh has been applied partially. The airline just announced to reduce its presence to one daily flight, however using a larger aircraft. So far, private airlines continue for now to serve at least Bangkok-Phnom Penh. The temporary suspension of one daily frequency by Thai Airways International does not significantly reduce capacities between both countries. Notwithstanding a possible continuous deterioration of the situation, flights remain the only way to “commute” between both Kingdoms.

And in the worst case of a complete suspension of flights between both countries, they would still be possibilities to fly. For example via Ho Chi Minh City -the closest international air gateway to Phnom Penh. But also via Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi or Singapore
