Canada plans to keep US border closed
Canada has no plans to allow cross border tourism with the US any time soon.
After several extensions, the current border restriction order is due to expire on 21 October.
It will likely be extended once again, said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Speaking on a radio show last week Trudeau said the US still needs to better contain the Covid-19 spread.
Some states with the highest infections share a border with Canada, including North Dakota, Montana and Wisconsin.
"The U.S. is not in a place where we would feel comfortable reopening those borders. We will continue to make sure that Canadian safety is top of mind. We see the cases in the United States and elsewhere around the world, and we need to continue to keep these border controls in place," the PM said.
Canada has also been experiencing a second wave.
"We’re certainly hoping that we’re able to get through this second wave in Canada and things get better quickly. We’re going to watch carefully to see how things are going in the United States as well, and encourage people to make smart decisions," Trudeau added.
The months-long border restriction forbids leisure travel but allows the movement of freight, and lets Americans travel overland if they are traveling to or from Alaska.
