Canadians told to not travel overseas
Canada is advising its citizens to avoid international travel
This includes those fully vaccinated.
The government updated its guidance making it clear about the risks and the potential disruption possible with overseas travel.
"To those who were planning to travel, I say very clearly, now is not the time to travel," said Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos.
"The rapid spread of the Omicron variant on a global scale makes us fear the worst for Canadians that may think of travelling. Travelling Canadians could contract the virus, or get stranded abroad."
On its website the government states: "Omicron variant is present in all continents, with community transmission of this VOC reported in some countries."
"Many foreign governments are implementing strict travel restrictions due to spread of the variant and international transportation options may be limited. As a result, you may have difficulty returning to Canada, or may have to remain abroad for an indeterminate period."
"Local authorities abroad may impose control measures suddenly, including movement restrictions such as lockdowns."
WestJet CEO Harry Taylor slammed the government’s advisory, saying it would create ‘unnecessary disruption and chaos’ for travellers.
Air Transport Association of Canada said the advisory has sparked thousands of cancellations already.
Omicron infection rates are climbing fast around the world.
The UK has already recorded 10,000 cases.
