Canaries top winter sun hot spot list

Wednesday, 22 Jan, 2008 0

The Canary Islands dominate the most popular winter sun destinations for British holidaymakers, according to new research.

Long haul destinations are also pulling sun seekers this winter, with Bangkok, Orlando, Cape Town, Goa and Barbados all in the top ten.

Research by flight price comparison website Cheapflights.co.uk shows that the Canary islands of Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria remain the UK favourites for winter sun.

However, Dubai is the fourth most popular winter holiday spot, with the Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh at tenth.

Cheapflights general manager Francesca Ecsery said: “January is a great time to grab a bargain.  Flight sales are everywhere so travellers have the choice between thousands of destinations at a very low cost.

“And the end of the holiday season brings on the January Blues which, coupled with this unpleasantly wet weather, makes it a very popular time of year to search for travel.”

Cheapflights’ Top 10 most searched destinations include:

  1.  Tenerife
  2.  Bangkok
  3.  Orlando
  4.  Dubai
  5.  Lanzarote
  6.  Cape Town
  7.  Goa
  8.  Gran Canaria
  9.  Barbados
  10.  Sharm El-Sheikh
