Caravan breaks back in vogue
The crippling euro, soaring mortgage payments, exorbitant utility bills and general economic gloom are contributing towards a resurgence in UK caravan holidays, reports the Times.
The holiday style famously championed by MP Margaret Beckett, who is now joined by luminaries such as C-lister Patsy Palmer and Take Thatter Mark Own in their praise of the van, is seeing a comeback as young parents feel the effect of the credit crunch and look to their own childhood days of caravanning pleasures for vacation inspiration.
The National Caravan Council has revealed figures showing a 20% rise in camp site bookings for July and August and Haven Holidays says there has been a 30% rise in bookings.
Hoseasons Holiday chief executive Richard Carrick added: “We have seen a real boost in booking figures over the last couple of months and the strength of the euro is having a really positive impact on UK bookings. In the last two weeks alone we have seen a 15% increase in booking figures even though May is already a traditionally busy period, and this is definitely a result of holidays makers looking closer to home for better value breaks. Caravan holidays on UK parks fit the bill perfectly.”
