Caribbean going high end
There’s a shift in the Caribbean to higher-end tourism, according to press reports.
“As a result of travelers’ needs for something new and different, an increasing number of islands are opting for quality over quantity, marketing themselves to more discerning visitors,” said the Miami Herald.
”Visitors are saying, ’We’ve been to the large hotel; we want the intimate, personalized service in a nice, small environment,” said Berthia Parle, former president of the Caribbean Hotel Association.
One noticeable trend is for visitors to want to buy their own villa or other type of housing.
The trend is particularly apparent in St. Lucia, the US Virgin Islands and the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Ritz-Carlton is building an exclusive resort community on West Caicos on an island that has been uninhabited for more than a century.
Reports say there are still inexpensive resorts, particularly in Jamaica, where large resorts are still being built.
