Carnival Australia appoints Katie Lahey to Chairman’s role
Carnival Australia announced today that it has appointed the CEO of the Business Council of Australia, Ms Katie Lahey, to Chair a newly-established Advisory Council to advise the company in light of its recent troubles.
Carnival Australia operates P&O Cruises, one of the world’s most recognized travel and tourism brands. Carnival Corporation and Plc main board member, Mr Peter Ratcliffe, said the establishment of the Advisory Council would oversee all P&O Cruises’ Australian operations, including the ongoing changes being made to ensure the safety and welfare of passengers.
“We are naturally delighted Ms Lahey has agreed to take on this new role. Her background and experience equips her perfectly for the position,” Mr Ratcliffe said.
Commenting on her appointment, Ms Lahey said: “I am pleased to take up this new position at a time of change and growth in the industry. The Advisory Council will be working to help ensure P&O Cruises can establish a new presence in the market.
“The Advisory Council will contribute to the company’s response to the Inquest into the 2002 death of Mrs Dianne Brimble”, with P&O Cruises saying that it has been deeply concerned about the circumstances of this tragedy.
“Continuous operational and cultural change began to take place from early 2005 following the transfer of responsibility for hotel operations from P&O Cruises to Princess Cruises’ International division.”
“During the course of the Inquest, P&O Cruises has made a number of further changes to better address passenger welfare, particularly safety and security.”
“I see an important part of the work of the Advisory Council will be to ensure P&O Cruises takes every step it can to try to ensure the circumstances of Mrs Brimble’s tragic death cannot be repeated.”
“We will also aim to reinforce cruising as an enjoyable, family holiday as P&O Cruises prepares to welcome Australia’s first superliner, ‘Pacific Dawn’, designed by Renzo Piano, to its fleet later this year.” “There will be new destinations and new choices to cater for our passengers and our job will be to equip the business for this next stage of its growth,” Ms Lahey said.
Ms Lahey will continue her role at the BCA, which she has held since 2001. Prior to 2001, she was Chief Executive of the NSW Chamber of Commerce and from 1992 to 1995 was Chief Executive of Sydney City Council.
She is a director of David Jones Limited, the Major Performing Arts Board and is a former Director of Australia Post, Hills Motorway Limited and the Garvan Research Foundation. She was awarded an Australian Centenary Medal in 2003. She has an MBA and a BA (Hons) from the University of Melbourne.
Other appointments to the Council will be made later in 2007.
