Carnival Corp joins opposition to Bermuda same-sex marriage ban

Carnival Corp. is adding its weight to the equality struggle in Bermuda after being stung by talk of boycotts by the LGBTQ community.

Bermuda’s government reversed course two months ago and again banned same-sex marriages which affects a number of Carnival Corp ships which are registered there.

Carnival’s Cunard and P&O Cruises fleets operate under a Bermuda flag of convenience which means they cannot conduct same-sex marriages wherever they may be in the world.

That has sparked a growing movement calling for a boycott until the company takes a stand.

It has now done that by joining OUTBermuda to fight the ban.

"Our engagement includes providing OUTBermuda with financial, civic and public relations support, as well as involvement by our company," Carnival said in a statement.

Carnival will also file an affidavit to back legal action by OUTBermuda

"We believe it is important to stand by the LGBTQ community in Bermuda and its many allies to oppose any actions that restrict travel and tourism," Carnival added.

Several high-profile personalities including Ellen DeGeneres have called for a travel boycott.

"OUTBermuda is proud to work with Carnival Corporation as the company has a long history of commitment to equality, inclusion, and diversity," the organization said.
