Carnival ship lifeboat damaged after falling into sea
A Carnival Cruise Line ship had a mishap during a routine test when docked in Cozumel, Mexico.
A lifeboat on the starboard side broke off and fell into the water during an unmanned test, it said.
The impact damaged the boast, according to images taken and posted online.
“The team on Carnival Dream was testing lowering one of the lifeboats when a latch got caught on one of the cables, resulting in the vessel hanging from one end then falling into the water,” the cruise line said.
It said there were no reported injuries.
Carnival conducts ‘regularly scheduled drills to make certain that lifeboats are in proper working order.’
Although the lifeboat is out of service, it didn’t impact the sailing as the cruise line routinely has more lifeboat seat capacity than is mandated by the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea.
Last year, Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas had to cancel some guests’ scheduled cruise to reduce overall guest capacity after one lifeboat was damaged.
