Carnival to pay $18m in pollution charges

Thursday, 23 Apr, 2002 0

Cruise company Carnival has agreed to pay $18m after pleading guilty to releasing oily waste in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.

Carnival admitted that six ships had illegally dumped the waste between 1998 and 2001 and that staff had made false entries about the practice in record books.

The company will pay $9m in fines together with a further $9 million going to environmental groups and to change practices onboard its ships.

Royal Caribbean paid out $27m for similar offences in 1999.
