Carnival unveils first LNG powered megaships

Monday, 16 Jun, 2015 0

Carnival has revealed details of its order for four next generation ships, which will be the world’s largest, each  with a passenger capacity of 6,600.

At more than 180,000 gross tons, the ships will be the biggest on the seas, overtaking Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class vessels.

The ships will also be the first to be powered by Liquefied Natural Gas, using dual-powered hybrid engines.

LNG is considered to be the cleanest burning fossil fuel.

Two of the ships, to be built at the Mayer Werft shipyard in Germany, will go to Carnival’s German brand AIDA Cruises.

The remaining two megaships will be built in Turku, Finland but Carnival has not yet disclosed which brands will operate them.

"We are looking forward to executing on the next step in our fleet enhancement plan. At a cost per berth in line with our existing order book, these new ships will enhance the return profile of our fleet," said Carnival CEO Arnold Donald.

These are exceptionally efficient ships with incredible cabins and public spaces featuring a design inspired by Micky Arison and Michael Thamm and developed by our new build teams."

Arison is Carnival Corporation chairman and Thamm heads the Costa Group, which includes AIDA Cruises.
