Middle East: Insurance companies are still ready to back airlines

Carriers that fly to and from the Middle East are likely to have full insurance cover in the case of war, according to the organisation that represents airline insurers.

Despite reports that suggested some insurers would cancel cover in the event of a war, the Aviation Insurance Offices Association (AIAO) said it thought that insurers would not cancel cover completely.

Many have been predicting a similar crisis to that which followed the 11 September attacks, with a range of insurance companies cancelling cover.

Peter Butler, chairman of the AIAO, said: “I think insurers will be trying hard not to cancel coverage completely and therefore there should not be the case for government intervention.”
