The CEO of now defunct airline Cathay Dragon is spreading his wings to new airline startup Greater Bay Airlines.

Algernon Yau Ying-wah joins the new airline as chief executive in the new year after nearly four decades with the Cathay Group.

Cathay Dragon was closed down by the Cathay Group in October in a major restructuring due to the Covid pandemic.

He will now take the helm of a startup that is still awaiting final approvals to begin operations.

Greater Bay Airlines currently has three aircraft and hopes to quickly expand to about 30 aircraft by 2025.

Yau also served as Service Delivery Director at Cathay Pacific.

Greater Bay Airlines is backed by Bill Wong Cho-bau, who also owns Shenzhen-based Donghai Airlines, which has a fleet of more than 20 planes.
