Cebu Pacific delays launch of first US flights
Asian low cost carrier Cebu Pacific’s landmark maiden flight to the US has been put back several months due to the lack of slots available at Manila’s overcrowded airport.
Cebu Pacific was due to start Manila-Guam flights later this month but this has now been put back until March 2015, an official at Guam International Airport Authority said.
"The delay in startup from December 2014 to March 2015 is due to the shortage of slots available at Terminal 2 in Manila where all international flights operate," said Rolenda Faasuamalie, Guam’s airport marketing administrator.
Faasuamalie said Cebu Pacific are currently in discussions with officials at Manila Airport.
The service will be the first to land on US soil for Cebu Pacific, which also recently proposed launching direct flights to Honolulu later next year.
When the Guam flight eventually takes to the skies, it will give the island three different carriers plying the route after Philippine Airlines and United Airlines.
Philippines aviation was upgraded to Category 1 status by the US Federal Aviation Authority earlier this year enabling Philippine carriers to launch new direct flights to the US.
