Celebrating 100 years of female flight

Wednesday, 16 Sep, 2008 0

SYDNEY – A hundred years ago Therese Peltier and Mrs Hard O Berg were the first women to take to the air as passengers in powered aircraft, flown by luminaries such as Wilbur Wright.

Since then, female flight has taken off with inspiring stories of heroines and their triumph in the sky, and to celebrate the century of female flight is the newly released book, “The 100 Greatest Women in Aviation”.

Authors, aviation journalist Liz Moscrop and partner Sanjay Rampal, have included a series of biographies, highlighting milestones over the last century from the first female pilot through to aspiring present day record breakers such as Jo Kelland, who is aiming to be the youngest ever female pilot.

“We loved writing this book, there are epic stories of female aviation pioneers from around the world including five from Australia and New Zealand,” said Liz.

Published by Aerocomm, this ground breaking book features four Australians Freda Thompson – the first Australian woman to fly solo from the United Kingdom to Australia and first women flying instructor for the British Empire.

Lorres Bonney – the first Australian women to gain a pilot’s licence, Nancy Bird Walton – aviation pioneer and founder of Australian Women Pilots’ Association, Linda Mary Corbould – the first woman to command an RAAF flying squadron.

Also included is record breaking Jean Batten, the kiwi also known as “Greta Garbo of the skies” for her feats of daring and highly skilled flying prowess.

International in scope, the book features well-known names such as Amelia Earhart and Amy Johnson, as well as forgotten heroines, like Li Xiapeng and Hilda Yan, young Chinese pilots who barnstormed America during World War II to protest against the Japanese occupation of their country.

“The book follows progress from early wood and canvas bi-planes to the space age, and we hope the book will provoke people into choosing their own personal favourite women aviators,” said Liz.

The book can be purchased online from www.aerocomm.aero
