Celebrity Cruises has taken delivery of the first in a series of new, larger ships.

Celebrity Solstice will be joined by Celebrity Equinox in 2009, Celebrity Eclipse in 2010, a fourth Solstice-class ship in 2011, and another in 2012.

The 2,850-passenger vessel was delivered to the line in Holland before sailing to Florida for a formal naming on November 14.

The ship then goes into service from Fort Lauderdale running seven-night Caribbean cruises this winter from November 23.

Celebrity Solstice will introduce a series of 10- and 11-night Mediterranean sailings from the port of Rome next spring.

Features on board include a half-acre Lawn Club with real grass, glass blowing, 10 restaurants and cabins which are larger than previous Celebrity vessels following input from a panel of five women.
