Cendant buys activity specialist
US travel giants Cendant Travel Distribution Services have been on the acquisition trail again.
The company has bought specialist online travel provider The Away Network, which sells active and outdoor travel. The Away Network’s websites include Away.com, GORP.com and Outside Online, which collectively generated nearly two million monthly unique visitors in 2004.
Chairman and chief executive of Cendant Travel Distribution Services, Sam Katz said the purchase was in line with the company’s strategy to “reach travellers earlier in the planning cycle” and move further into specialist sectors.
The Away Network’s existing management team, headed by chief executive Sean Greene will stay in place.
Recent acquisitions by Cendant include ebookers, Gullivers/OctopusTravel.com and Ramada hotels all announced in December last year.
