Chancellor may hike APD for long-haul flights

Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s Autumn Budget could see an air passenger duty hike for long-haul flights.

It forms part of a long promised overhaul of APD.

APD charges fall into two bands – flights under 2,000 miles and flights over 2,000 miles.

According to the Guardian, a higher fee for long haul would offset a cut in APD for short flights.

APD is paid by airlines and passed on to the customer in higher fares.

The Chancellor could also introduce a new, lower rate specifically for domestic flights.

Officials are weighing a three-tier system with the addition of a band for longer flights of 5,500 miles or more.

Advocacy groups have criticised the government’s thinking on APD reform, saying its goal to help reduce emissions makes no sense with cuts for domestic flights.

Campaign for Better Transport wants to see some domestic flights banned.
