Cheap Fiji holidays looking likely for Kiwis and Aussies
Reports from New Zealand say that Kiwis looking for a cheap holiday are likely to be lured to Fiji after a crash in reservations in the South Pacific nation.
Fiji Islands Tourism and Hotel Association president Dixon Seeto told www.stuff.co.nz that hotels and resorts are reporting a 40% to 50% drop in forward bookings for the first quarter next year, with bookings plummeting in the wake of political turmoil, adding, What I can see happening is that there are a heap of cancellations but what is also worrying is a lack of forward bookings.”
He added, “Workers were being laid off and hours cut at many of the top resorts and what doesn’t help are travel advisories being put out by all the major embassies and high commissions.” He also said, “This war of word and you guys in the media, certainly in the overseas media and television, you have been quite graphic about what can happen.”
It appears that major wholesalers and tourism operators will meet in Nadi on Thursday and while Mr Seeto would not reveal the likely strategy, in the past Fiji has resorted to heavy discounting and extensive advertising to get the numbers back.
Around 503,000 tourists visit Fiji annually with around 20% of them from New Zealand and tourism is Fiji’s biggest foreign exchange earner.
