China Eastern Airlines to expand fleet size to 800 planes

Friday, 18 Apr, 2016 0
China Eastern Airlines will ramp up its fleet size to about 800 planes within the next five years, buoyed by growth prospects in the China-US market.

As of the end of 2015, the carrier had 560 jets and plans to boost its fleet size to meet projected growth in long haul routes to the US.

China Eastern president Ma Xulun said despite record numbers, there is still room to grow capacity to the US.

"We are optimistic on the growth potential of the China-US market," he told Reuters.

In 2015 2.6 million Chinese visitors came to the US and that is expected to grow to more than three million this year.

Delta Air Lines invested $450 million in the Chinese carrier for a 3.5% stake and the two carriers now operate more than 400 codeshare routes.
