China warns citizens against US travel
Chinese tourist arrivals to the US are likely to continue falling.
Beijing has issued not one but two travel warnings for its citizens heading to the US.
The tourism ministry is warning its citizens of the dangers of high crime, including robbery and gun violence, including mass shootings.
The ministry advises all travelers to ‘fully assess the risk and improve awareness of safety and security.’
"Recently, shootings, robberies and thefts have occurred frequently in the United States," a statement from the ministry of culture and tourism said.
China issued a similar advisory last year.
It could also significantly impact business travel and academia,
China’s foreign ministry said law enforcement agencies in the US have ‘repeatedly’ used the pretext of immigration issues to ‘harass; Chinese citizens in the US and those working at China-funded organizations
It warned students not to apply to study in the US due to a big increase in visa denials and long processing delays.
"The education ministry reminds students and academics of the need to strengthen risk assessment before studying abroad, enhance prevention awareness, and make corresponding preparations."
Inbound tourism from China declined nearly 6% last year.
It was the first fall for about 15 years, amid an increasingly damaging trade war.
