Chinese firm to build Cuba golf resort
A Chinese company has signed a letter of intent with the Cuban government to build a golf course and resort.
The deal was sealed on the sidelines of Cuba’s annual tourism fair and developer Beijing Enterprises Group plans to construct a 18-hole golf course, marina, condominiums and hotels.
The project will be located on the north coast at Bello Monte, close to Cuba’s only other golf resort at Varadero.
Golf tourism in Cuba has been slow to get off the ground but is being seen as a way to diversify its tourism offerings, with one eye on a hoped for influx of US visitors as travel restrictions slowly ebb away.
Tourism Minister Manuel Marrero said last month tourist arrivals were up 15% for the January-March period to a record 1.14 million visitors.
