A Chinese air traveller is facing a hefty fine after opening an emergency exit because he was ‘too hot and stuffy.’

The passenger, identified by the surname of Chen, has been detained for 15 days and will likely have to pay the equivalent of several thousand dollars in compensation.

After seeking some fresh air, he opened the emergency door which activated the evacuation slide.

It took place on a Lucky Air flight on the tarmac of Mianyang Nanjiao Airport after arriving from Sanya.

Mr Chen claimed he only wanted to open a window and was unaware it was an emergency door, local media reported.

The emergency slide was also damaged when it deployed, Xinhua reported.

In a statement on Sina Weibo airport officials said it is calculating how much Chen will be fined to pay for the disruption.

China’s airline safety act states any wilful damage aboard aircraft can lead to immediate detention of 10-15 days.
