Christmas strike threat at Birmingham Airport
Four hundred workers at Birmingham International Airport will today vote on whether to carry out strike action over the Christmas period – action that could reportedly cost the airport £300,000 a day.
According to The Times, the threatened action is over proposals to stop a final pension scheme for new workers, and to increase contributions for existing workers by one per cent.
The newspaper reports that fire service workers are among those that would stop work if the strike goes ahead – and that the airport cannot operate without firefighters on duty.
Peter Coulson, of the Amicus union, is quoted as saying: “The union has spent two years negotiating with the company to no avail. Birmingham International Airport faces shutdown over Christmas unless the company stops playing Scrooge with hundreds of staff.”
The result of the vote will be announced on Saturday.
