Cirium: Flight cancellations surged last month
Global flight cancellations spiked by nearly one third in May, with more than half of these cancellations in the Asia Pacific region.
Aviation analytics firm Cirium released its May on-time performance report, showing that North America also suffered significant disruption last month with nearly a quarter (23%) of the cancellations.
This was largely attributed to weather conditions during the Memorial Day travel season.
SAS maintained its position as the top airline globally (and within Europe) with an on time performance of 89.72%.
On a region by region basis, Air Canada was the best in North America with an OTP of 79.06%, while Virgin Australia was the best in APAC.
SAS continued its dominance by securing the top spot in the Europe region. Turkish Airlines, British Airways and other large carriers in the region also made the top rankings.
For the third consecutive time this year, Copa Airlines led the way in Latin America with an OTP of 93.49%.
Safair was the most punctual in the Middle East & Africa region.
