Clean cruise lines?
Four cruise ships received 100 scores and all but one passed inspection by the National Center for Environmental Health.
The four perfect scores included Westerdam, Crystal Serenity, Mariner of the Seas and Silver Whisper.
Century, however, received a “not satisfactory” rating.
The center’s staff inspects cruise ships with 13 or more passengers with foreign itineraries that call on US ports.
The inspections are to ensure that vessels are maintaining adequate levels of sanitation and to provide guidance to vessel staff when needed.
Some of the inspection criteria include the protection and disinfection of the ship’s water supply, employee hygiene practices and environmental training programs for the crew.
Inspections are scored on a 100 point system. Those that score an 85 or lower can modify the problem and be re-inspected.
Since the program began, the number of disease outbreaks on ships has declined even though the number of ships sailing and the number of passengers carried has increased significantly, according to the center.
