CLEAR airport security lapses under scrutiny
Expedited airport security service CLEAR is under investigation after a couple of passenger security lapses.
In one case a passenger fished out a discarded boarding pass from the trash and was escorted through security checkpoints without verifying their ID.
The traveler wasn’t even enrolled in CLEAR’s identity-vetting service.
In another incident, a passenger used CLEAR’s service with a false identity.
Lawmakers want changes to how the TSA handles CLEAR members.
Rep. Bennie Thompson slammed CLEAR’s ‘lax security controls.’
“After multiple security breaches, it is apparent the company puts its bottom line ahead of the security of our aviation system,” Thompson said.
“The homeland is at greater risk until TSA acts to completely close these security vulnerabilities.”
CLEAR said the issue was employees not following protocols.
In two cases, staffers were fired because of this.
They were ‘isolated’ incidents, the company said.
It is not mandatory for all CLEAR enrolled passengers to present their ID to TSA agents although they are randomly checked.
TSA spokesperson R. Carter Langston recently said the agency will now require CLEAR passengers to use TSA’s Credential Authentication Technology machines to scan their IDs.
