CLIA highlights UK cruise sector’s economic benefits to MPs
Cruise Lines International Association showcased the benefits of UK cruise tourism at the House of Commons.
The event was sponsored by Royston Smith MP for Southampton Itchen, a constituency which includes the Port of Southampton.
The cross-party event was addressed by Baroness Vere, Maritime Minister, and Shadow Maritime Minister Mike Kane MP, plus 25 MPs.
Maritime Minister Baroness Vere said: “The cruise industry has been vital for our economy, and creating jobs for thousands.”
“Government will continue to support the growth of the sector, as it enters a year of renewal.”
Royston Smith MP said: “The cruise industry is extremely important to my constituency, supporting many regional businesses.”
“The UK cruise industry brings great economic benefits to our country.”
Andy Harmer, CLIA Managing Director for UK and Ireland, said: “This was about recognising how benefits extend beyond ports.”
The reception gave MPs an opportunity to hear more about the contributions of the cruise industry to local economies and speak to senior cruise line representatives.
