Without treatment, death can occur within hours. A person may get cholera by drinking water or eating food contaminated with bacterium. The disease spreads rapidly in areas with inadequate treatment of sewage and drinking water. Bacterium may also live in the environment in brackish rivers or coastal waters which are common in China.
