Cold Enough to Make Snow at Falls Creek Overnight
There has been a dramatic change in the weather overnight which has bolstered the hopes of a snowy winter amongst the community at Falls Creek, Victoria’s largest alpine resort.
David Plant Falls Creek’s Operation Manager said:”We are experiencing the first cold snap of autumn. It was cold enough to make snow at Falls Creek overnight and the temperature was a chilly minus 2.1C at about 7am this morning.
“Our extension to the snowmaking system down Wombat’s Ramble, the longest beginners run in Australia, is complete and we are adding new generation snowmaking infrastructure to the alpine resort’s most popular ski trail Main Street.”
Whilst Victoria has been experiencing a heatwave the abrupt arrival of winter snow has sent the mercury plummeting and it only reached a maximum of 2.7C at Falls Creek today.
In a dramatic turnaround from the recent heatwave, Victoria is now shivering in cold, showery winds, hail and even snow. The sudden shift is the result of a deep southwesterly airstream from the Southern Ocean, a complete contrast to the hot, dry airmass roasting southern Australia earlier in the month.
The early winter chill will persist for the next few days with further showers and alpine snow likely on Thursday and again during the weekend.
