Combining the best aspects of group and individual travel?

A Colorado-based company that specializes in travel to Asia and the Pacific is offering both custom itineraries and group departures, says Marilyn Downing Staff.

“Custom itineraries are just that. They can fulfill many wishes,” said Ms Downing Staff, CEO of Asia Transpacific Journeys, an 18-year-old company.

Her company offers, for example, a small group (maximum of 16) departure to Mongolia this summer. A traveler who can’t go at that time can still experience one-on-discussions of the area’s people, its wildlife, museums and other stopovers on horseback.

The 17-day trip costs almost $6,000, which is about the same for an individual taking the journey, according to Ms Downing Staff.

“People are often amazed to learn that a custom journey is often the same price as-or less than a group trip, given the same standard of accommodation,” she said. “While a group trip traveler will enjoy economies of scale, a custom trip traveler does not have to pay the extra cost of a tour leader.”

But the single traveler receives the same accommodations, meals, entrance fees and other costs in both types of trips, she said.

In addition, “The traveler on a custom trip enjoys the same guarantees as those on a group trip,” she added.
