Come back, spring breakers?

Sunday, 15 Mar, 2006 0

Many hotels in recent years have discouraged the spring break crowd as being too boisterous and not worth the trouble, but some Miami properties are finding ways to make it profitable.

Anita Krieger, owner of the Haddon Hall Hotel in South Beach, sells about one-third of its 123 rooms to spring-break wholesalers, reported The Miami Herald’s Herald.com.

Wholesalers then offer marked-up travel packages to college students across the country.

While Ms Krieger charges discounted rates to the wholesalers, she also imposes a seven-day minimum stay requirement to generate steady income during slower weekdays.

“They’re a seven-day business. Is it as high as other people would pay? No. But the seven days helps out,” she told the Herald.

Spring breakers bring such challenges as repair bills after noisy parties.

When other guests complain, they sometimes want a room for free.

Some Miami hotels that want the spring breakers are charging cash damage deposits to deter the cost of physical damages from sometimes disruptive young guests.
