Concern over disease leads to huge quarantine operation
Singapore: More than 700 people isolated as Government warns travellers
Concern is growing following more worrying news of the pneumonia virus that has already killed dozens of people around the world.
While the World Health Organisation is claiming there is no need to restrict travel because the disease is only spread through close contact, at least nine victims in Hong Kong are thought to have caught the disease on a flight to Beijing. One of the affected passengers is thought to have caught the disease while visiting an infected relative in hospital in Hong Kong.
Nearly 500 cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) have now been reported in 13 countries worldwide. Another worrying development has been in Singapore, where more than 700 people have been quarantined for 10 days and a special task force has been set up to deliver food and supplies to those affected.
The Government is warning travellers to South East Asia that they need to be aware of these outbreaks and take them into account in their travel plans. The latest information is available on the FCO website at www.fco.gov.uk.
