Conquer your computer
Australia’s tech guru, Yvonne Adele, dubbed ‘Ms Megabyte’ says too many people jump on the ‘technology is overrated bandwagon’ when organising events.
At AIME this year, Ms Megabyte, who helped thousands of Australians embrace technology, appearing regularly in the nation’s media, will be facilitating a master class session on how to make sure you choose the right technology to create an interesting, high tech event.
Ms Megabyte says the first lesson to take on board whether you’re organising a Christmas party or a large convention, is to always have a backup. Not just of the software being presented during the event, but a backup plan should the hardware malfunction.
She says never assume there will be enough batteries for lapel microphones or laptops for speakers.
“It is always fantastic to get presentations loaded onto one laptop from all of your speakers, but it is actually unrealistic, because most speakers make changes to their presentations up to the night before.
“Ask speakers to send at least a five page sample of the presentation they’ll be using – you can use it as a placeholder and make sure the program used will work on your laptop.”
She also says too many people try and do everything ‘old school’ and are ‘throwing some very useful tools out the window.’
“One thing which I’ve found which is really effective is to give all speakers a convention template and ask them to ensure their presentation is created with that.
“Have it professionally designed by an expert – it gives a totally seamless look to the whole event and will ensure your audience isn’t disappointed with sloppy work.”
