Controlling Skiing Vacation Costs Amidst Recession

Thursday, 22 Jan, 2011 0

The downturn in the economy has affected every sphere of life. From joblessness to the stock market – everything seems to move in a wrong way.

So, we are getting thoughtful over the fact about how to enjoy the great family sport of downhill skiing or snowboarding in a down economy, as skiing is quite expensive. There is already a decline of visitors in most American ski resorts and a Colorado ski trade group reports that through December the rate of booking is down by 14%.

Thus, the question arises that how you can deal with the expenses and still can have a great ski trip?

Some effective ideas are delineated below that can help you to control your expenses regardless of the resort or destination:

Grab the best deal – This year, most of the resorts will provide better discounts on multi-day passes than previous years and there will be the provision for more “kids ski free”, so that despite the monetary down turn, people will be attracted by the affordable packages. Many popular family resorts have already announced great deals for the kids and this emerging trend is being adopted by most of the western skiing destinations. So grab this opportunity and also check out about the potential lodging or lift discounts with your resorts.

Make your meal expenses low – Lately, most family ski lodging are coming in the form of condos that will provide you with a kitchen. However, you can always opt for a simple meal such as cold cereal and OJ for breakfasts and pasta or sandwiches and fruit for dinners. In this way, you can always save some money without much effort.

Rental cars – Most ski areas have some sort of transit systems and it is best to opt for the free shuttles to travel across the town, rather than hiring a car.

Ski for half a day – It is effective and more enjoyable if you ski for half a day and then get engaged in some other fun filled activities such as playing Wii or going for shopping. So get hold of half day passes for skiing as the entire day can make you exhausted. Above all, remember that you are vacationing and not in a boot camp.

Renting of skis – While renting the skis; try to avail the standard issue skis instead of high performance skis – this will save money. Consider the quality of your quads rather than the quality of your skis. Never rent the skis after reaching the mountains. It is always advisable to deal with the price of the skis in the off-resort locations.

Choose the less expensive resort – By choosing the cost effective resorts, you can always save a considerable amount of money. Instead of selecting the expensive Jackson Hole, you can choose the alternative of Grand Targhee, which provides similar ambience of skiing. Aspen has also several cheap and attractive resorts nearby.

Lodging – Choose your quality of accommodation that will best suit your budget.

In brief, consider what is most necessary for you and then make the deal accordingly.
