Cornwall Newquay airport temporarily closed
Cornwall Newquay airport will be closed for commercial flights from December 1 until December 20 following a misunderstanding over its ownership handover from the RAF to Cornwall County Council.
December 1 was supposed to mark the date when the airport at St Mawgan changed hands. But the council says the airport will not be licenced until December 19 and the RAF is refusing to operate the airfield beyond the December 1 handover date.
The terminal building will remain open and in operation for check-in.
Flights up to and including November 30 will operate as normal and passengers due to fly after that date and before December 20 will be advised on alternative arrangements. A hotline will be set up for passengers and agents to call with queries.
“We are very sorry for the inconvenience this temporary cancellation of flights from the airport will cause to those who have booked flights during this period,†said Andrew Mitchell, economic portfolio holder for Cornwall County Council. “We are clearly very disappointed that the RAF has not been able to continue to operate the airfield beyond December 1. We would like to place on record our sincere appreciation for the cooperation we have received from the RAF throughout this project.â€
