Corrie fans swamp new attraction
Corrie fans have overwhelmed a new visitor attraction making it as popular as attractions like The Making of Harry Potter and the David Bowie exhibition at the V&A.
The new ‘Coronation Street: The Tour’ visitor attraction predicts around 12,000 people a week will visit the former ITV studio site over the next six months.
Tickets to the Manchester attraction, which includes a tour of the famous cobbled street, the indoor sets and various memorabilia, went on sale in March.
The tours started last weekend.
Continuum Leading Attractions, the company behind the new ‘Coronation Street: The Tour’ visitor attraction, was also behind the Jorvik Centre in York 30 years ago and currently operates York’s Chocolate Story, Oxford Castle Unlocked, the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth and The Real Mary King’s Close in Edinburgh.
With more than half the 300,000 tickets for the attraction pre-sold, Continuum said total sales for the initial six months of the tour were likely to top £5m.
The company is looking at whether more capacity can be released to meet the massive demand for tickets.
The predicted visitor numbers would make ‘Coronation Street: The Tour’ the third highest-grossing visitor attraction in the North West in 2014, and among the top 20 nationally.
Juliana Delaney, chief executive of Continuum, said: "More than half of the total tickets have already been sold, and only a handful of attractions – such as The Making of Harry Potter or the David Bowie exhibition at the V&A – have had such high interest prior to the doors being opened."
