Costa Rica expands sustainable tourism standards to restaurant industry
The Costa Rican Tourism Board has launched its first Certification for Sustainable Tourism standards for the F&B industry, certifying the country’s first five restaurants.
"We are making history, as we begin certifying the first restaurants in our country that are committed to making a difference in issues such as climate change, animal welfare and food waste, among others," said Alberto Lopez, general manager for the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT).
"We hope that this not only serves as a model for other businesses to follow, but to set our destination apart as a truly authentic culinary destination that takes the message of sustainability to heart."
The five restaurants to gain CST accreditation are Restaurante Fogo, in San Jose, Cañon de la Vieja, Vista del Golfo, Restaurante Lagarta and Restaurante Jaguar, all located in Guanacaste region.
ICT introduced the CST standards in 1997 and has so far awarded 321 hotels, tour operators, car rental agencies and theme parks throughout the country.
The CST program rates businesses on criteria such as their use of recycled, reusable and natural products, energy and water saving and waste management.
"We invite travelers to come taste the authentic Tico flavors, while also supporting these businesses that are truly committed to giving back to the environment and to society," Lopez added.
