Council introduces Cruising Journalism Award

The International Cruise Council Australasia has announced the inclusion of a Media Award in its annual industry awards, to reward and inspire quality travel stories on cruising in Australia.

Open to freelance and staff journalists from consumer travel and trade publications, the Media Award will consider all articles resulting from a cruise which have appeared in print or electronic media.

Cruise Council General Manager Karen Christensen said the award acknowledged the influence of travel media in educating consumers about the vast range of cruising options available to them.

“We encourage travel writers to enter their work and hope the introduction of our Media Award will show them we recognise and appreciate their efforts,” Ms Christensen said.

To be eligible, cruise articles must be at least 800 words in length, have been published or broadcast during 2006 and be based on a cruise experience undertaken within an 18-month period prior to publication.

In addition, journalists must disclose whether they have been hosted on a cruise or travelled at their own expense.

An independent panel including a representative from the Cruise Council will select the winner. Judges will be looking for entertaining and informative stories covering the shipboard experience as well as cruise destinations.

Submissions will be accepted until December 15, 2006, with the presentation of the award to occur in January 2007 at the annual Cruise Council Awards ceremony.
