Couple seriously injured in Greek quake
A Scottish couple were badly hurt in the powerful earthquake which rocked the Greek holiday island of Lefkada, it has emerged.
Tom and Sylvia Steen, who are in their 30s, were walking beside cliffs when the quake struck, sending rocks raining down on top of them.
They were taken to the island’s general hospital and later transferred to the University Hospital of Ioannina in Epirus, the Press Association reported.
Mr Steen’s leg was broken in two places and he had to receive a blood transfusion. His wife suffered serious head injuries, but the condition of both she and her husband was described as “not life-threatening”.
The earthquake, which measured 6.4 on the Richter scale, struck in the early hours of yesterday morning. The Athens Geodynamic Institute said its epicentre was about six miles under the seabed and about 19 miles west of the island.
Mr and Mrs Steen were on a package holiday with Thomas Cook.
